WandaVision: Is It Worth Your Time?

I grew up with Marvel and the MCU has produced some of my favourite movies. So it’s hardly surprising that I’d want to watch WandaVision as soon as it came out. Especially considering that I take the time to pay for Disney+ every month.

So for those of you who don’t currently pay for Disney+, I’m here to tell you whether or not it’s worth your time to find a way to watch this show. So far, only two episodes are out and so my review can only be based upon those initial episodes.

I will attempt to make my review as spoiler free as possible, considering that the show was very recently released. However, if I accidentally drop a spoiler here and there, I’m sorry. The vast majority of my reviews have spoilers and it’s difficult to cast judgement on a show without revealing any of the details.

WandaVision’s Tone

Agnes, Wanda, Vision

WandaVision is initially in black and white and set up like an old fashioned sitcom. Wanda’s magic and Vision’s non-humanness almost become secondary. For the most part, the show attempts to focus on the trials of a housewife attempting to fit in her community and the pressure Vision is placed under as the sole breadwinner and the man of the home. It genuinely feels like an olden sitcom.

From the costume to the attitude of the people to the accent. Other than Wanda and Vision’s presence, there’s nothing to suggest that the show is run by Marvel.

Well, except for one thing. In between the sitcom humour and the daily hurdles of an old fashioned society, there is an eerie vibe. A sense that everything is not as it seems. A sense that something is very wrong. For one, neither Wanda nor Vision can give any concrete answers when asked about their life before they moved into Westview. Or even why they moved. What their plans are. How they’d met.

It’s made abundantly clear that the sitcom nature of the show is a façade. Something is very wrong.

WandaVision’s Pacing

Here’s the downside. If you are a Marvel fan but not a fan of old fashioned sitcoms, you might get bored with the beginning of WandaVision. When I started the first episode, my housemates were sitting with me but two of them left within the first five minutes. And that’s because it’s a slow start. Things are allowed to settle. The writers spend a good deal of time setting up the illusion first.

It isn’t until the end of the second episode that there is concrete evidence of something being very wrong. As I said before, the show is eerie but that’s only sometimes. For the most part, you could almost convince yourself that this is just an old fashioned sitcom with the main twist being that Wanda has magic and Vision isn’t human.

You have to be patient and watch quite a while for the show to reveal that there’s something seriously wrong. That Wanda’s magic and Vision’s non-humanness aren’t the only things wrong in this world.

There is a dark force at play but it takes time to get to that part. It takes time for things to slowly transition to colour.

End Of Episode 2 Of WandaVision

The end of episode 2 of WandaVision fully pulls the show from being an old fashioned sitcom to a Marvel show. It is established that Wanda knows something is wrong and is consciously refusing to accept it. And it looks like the main conflict is about to be introduced.

I haven’t seen episode 3 yet but now that it’s switched to colour, I think this will feel more like a show produced by Marvel. The slow pacing of the first two episodes will become less and less of a problem now that the world has been fully established.

It’s time for the superhero shenanigans to begin.

Do I Recommend You Watch WandaVision? Yes.

I do think WandaVision is going to be a good show. The premise is set up well. The acting is good. The costumes are wonderful. The humour is top notch. It just takes time for things to start rolling. And if you are willing to wait for the main conflict to be established, I think you’ll enjoy WandaVision. So yeah, I definitely recommend you find a way to watch the show.

If you’ve already seen the first two episodes, feel free to leave your thoughts but please try to make sure you aren’t leaving spoilers in your comments. There are many more people who want to see this show and just haven’t found a way yet.
